Title: The London Spy: a Book of Town Travels
Author: Thomas Burke
Publisher: Thornton Butterworth
Publication Year: 1922
Binding: Hardcover
First Edition: Yes
Condition: Good - Signed
Notes: First edition, 1st issue (1922); hardcover WITH dust jacket and related ephemera, including a letter SIGNED by Thomas Burke; dust jacket is chipped on edges and shows discoloration; dust jacket is in Brodart; red cloth is bumped on corners, spine ends softened; water/moisture damage at bottom edge of book has stained the bottommost portion of the paste-downs; binding appears solid. Other than bookstore-related pencil markings, pages are clean. This book about Burke's vast knowledge of London was subject to a libel suit for a reference Burke makes to a well-known bookstore and, more specifically, its proprietor. Due to the charge, as many issues as could be of the 1st issue were suppressed and a 2nd issue was printed with a cancel leaf substitued that omits the shop owners name, but is written much more scathingly. Among the ephemera is Burke's letter, a letter signed by the shop owner's son, the cancel leaf, photographs of the bookstore, & a letter authenticating the edition.
